bis logo10 Questions With…Manda Rin from Bis

Bis were a Scottish rock band composed of Steven Clark (Sci-fi Steven), John Clark (John Disco), and Amanda MacKinnon (Manda Rin). Formed in 1994, About a year later, they appeared on Top of the Pops performing “Kandy Pop” from their Secret Vampire Soundtrack EP ahead of its release. Bis released a number of EPs, three of which entered the UK Singles Chart. In the late 1990s “Eurodisco”, from their album, Social Dancing, became a notable success for the band. The band broke up in 2003, but reformed briefly in 2007 for a series of concerts. Hayley caught up with Manda Rin at the end of 2009 for a quick chat!

Can you tell us how it felt to be part of the first unsigned band on TOTP?

Utterly amazing and one of the biggest achievements of my life. the 1st unsigned band thing isn’t as giant a thing in a way, but just having done TOTP is something I’ll never forget and something other bands never got to do so we’re very lucky.

What were the influences for Bis?

Human League, Devo, Lilliput, Huggy Bear, Bikini Kill, XTC. So much stuff between the 3 of us really.

How are you enjoying being a solo artist?

It’s very different but really relaxing and fun. Learning to appreciate stuff and appreciate stuff rather than get stressed like I did in my teens at times.

Are there any plans for Bis to bounce back on the scene?

If the offers good ha ha!

How do you find time to be a businesswoman and make music?

It’s hard but I absolutely love being my own boss. The days of making money from music are well in the past for me, so if I can do a job that I do my own hours and can work music into it then I’m over the moon.

How did it feel to be named one of Glasgow’s style icons?

That was such a surprise and I’ve no idea where it came from! What a flattering thing though!

Do you enjoy seeing local live bands?

Futuristic Retro Champions are the best band in Glasgow right now!

manda-rinWhat have Manda Rin fans got to look forward to in 2010?

Looking good for a wee Manda Rin US festival and something else in Spain hopefully. I’m also going to get working on some new songs soon so lots to come!

    Do you have any pets?

Oh my little princess cat Akiko!!

What bands are you into at the minute?

Ladyhawke, Kasabian, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Late of the Pier, La Roux, Devo etc.
